"Bush has been absolutely critical to these changes," said Sharansky in response. "He defeated Saddam Hussein, one of the world's worst and most oppressive dictators. The fact that the leader of the free world is talking directly to dissidents and not just to dictators –men who are only interested in internal stability and not freedom - means a great deal for the establishment of democracy. Our leaders are our only hope for peace. The more people are given the choice of living in fear or living in freedom the less effective is the propaganda of extremism and the less chance terrorists and dictators will have to get support. Changes in the Mideast will continue for the better if we can link concessions with {totalitarian and authoritarian governments} with demands from us for democratic reforms."
